Composer Study — 1st term Composer is George Frideric Handel

Literature — Little House in the Big Woods

Spelling/Phonics — High Frequency Word List 1. All single letter phonograms and ph, sh, ch, ck, qu, th. Spelling Rules 1, 2, 3, 4, and silent e rules. 

Picture Study — Fra Angelico is our 1st term artist.

Poetry — 1st term Poetry will be over Children’s Anthology of Poetry and Christina Rossetti.

Second Grade Math — Compare and order numbers within 1000. Begin 2nd Grade addition and subtraction with part-whole, difference and word problems. Adding 2 and 3 digit numbers. 

Third Grade Math —  Addition and subtraction by tens and hundreds, finding the missing number, methods for mental addition and methods for mental subtraction.

Handwork — 1st term handwork is all about nature printing. We will be finding items on our nature walks to use for printing on paper in class. We will use watercolor, acrylic and ink to make our creations.

History / Read Aloud — This year is the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrim’s landing. We will begin the celebration by reading N.C. Wyeth’s Pilgrims.

Art — Second and Third Grade will be working on an abstract piece using oil pastels and watercolors. We will then move on to a desert piece with chalk pastels. 

Spanish — I open the Book / Abro el Libro  (Series), I Write / Escribo (Series), Rima (Rhyme), La Vida del Árbol (Rhyme), “Martinillo” (Song), and “Los Pollitos Dicen.”

Music — Loud - Soft, Fast - Slow, Timbre, Long - Short, Beat, Accent, 

Breathing techniques, “God Bless America,” and “This Land Is Your Land.”

Physical Conditioning — Second and Third Grade will learn how to play kickball. 

Nature Study — We will learn about the Sassafras tree, Setaria Italica (known as Foxtail or Bristlegrass) and Pokeweed. 

Recitation — “Cadence” by Margaret Wise Brown

Science — 1st term is all about Mammals. 

Tales and Fables — The Happy Prince by Oscar Wilde
